Four bodies have been recovered by Limpopo police and emergency teams after a vehicle was carried away by the swollen Makotopong River.
According to reports the incident occurred on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026, when five people were travelling in a blue Renault Kwid along the gravel road between Madiga and Makotopong villages.
The vehicle reportedly overturned at the overflowing bridge and was carried into the river. One occupant managed to escape and immediately alerted authorities.
“The provincial Search and Rescue team responded to the scene and recovered the body of Lebapa Petrus Mochitele (27) on Sunday. EMS personnel certified him dead at the scene,” said provincial spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
Ledwaba said search efforts continued on Monday, with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, Fire and Rescue teams, and a helicopter working tirelessly. During the operation, the submerged vehicle was found, and additional bodies were recovered.
“The submerged vehicle was located, and three more bodies were recovered: Seobi Dikgale (33), Betty Makokoane (22), and Shellote Dikgale (30), all from Madiga Village.
Police have opened an inquest docket, and investigations are ongoing.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the efforts of the multidisciplinary team, noting that the recovery would at least allow the families to find closure. ‘My heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families.’
