Dr John Hlophe, deputy president of the UMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party), has been reinstated as the party's first deputy president and parliamentary party leader, effective immediately, following a thorough investigation into allegations about his conduct.

The decision was made by the party's President, Jacob Zuma, after a legal panel led by an advocate reviewed the case and recommended that Hlophe be reinstated.

IOL previously reported that the party had suspended Hlophe pending the outcome of a full investigation.

The suspension came after Zuma returned from a trip to Burkina Faso, where he had been promoting South Africa's interests.

Upon his return, Zuma convened a meeting with senior MK Party officials, where he was briefed about decisions made in the National Assembly without broader consultation.

At the time, the party confirmed that Zuma had issued a precautionary suspension to Hlophe from his leadership roles to reaffirm the principle of collective leadership within the party.

Additionally, the party nullified Hlophe’s decision to remove former Chief Whip Collen Makhubele and appoint former Western Cape MEC Des van Rooyen in her place, emphasising the leadership's commitment to discipline, accountability, and collective decision-making as outlined in the party's constitution.

Party officials, including MK Party Head of the Presidency Magasela Mzobe, stressed that the suspension was not an indication of Hlophe’s removal from the party or his parliamentary seat. Mzobe explained that the suspension was intended to allow the President time to fully assess the situation.

“The suspension was intended to calm the situation and allow the president to fully apply his mind to the circumstances that led to that drastic decision,” he said in an interview.

“It was not to remove the deputy president entirely from parliament. He remains a member of parliament. He remains the first deputy president of MK.”

In a statement to the party’s structures and membership, secretary general Sibonelo Nomvalo confirmed the President's decision to reinstate Hlophe immediately to both his leadership roles.

He emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation within the party moving forward.

"The suspension of Dr Hlophe arose out of matters that necessitated the President to appoint an independent legal panel, led by an Advocate, to investigate allegations levelled at  Hlophe and make recommendations to the President on the necessary course of action," Nomvalo said.

After receiving the panel's findings, Zuma held a bilateral meeting with Hlophe, during which all the allegations were discussed.

Following this, the president made the decision to reinstate Hlophe to his positions as 1st deputy president and parliamentary party leader, according to Nomvalo.

Nomvalo also encouraged party members to extend a warm welcome to Hlophe as he resumed his duties.

“The Secretary General, therefore, hereby encourages members to extend their warm reception to Dr. Hlophe as he assumes his duties with immediate effect in pursuit of the party objectives, social cohesion, and human solidarity,” he said.
