The body of a six-year-old girl has been dug up from a shallow grave in Gqeberha, while two people accused of killing her have been arrested.

The child's body was found at St George's Beach on Friday after detectives from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit tracked down two suspects in Makhanda and brought them back to Gqeberha for questioning.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the accused are a 25-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man.

She said the identity of the little girl will only be confirmed and made public once formal identification has been completed.

"Two suspects [have been arrested] in connection with the murder of a six-year-old girl, following an intensive investigation," she said.

"FCS detectives followed up on information regarding two persons of interest believed to be in Makhanda.

"The information was operationalised, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old female and a 31-year-old male."

She added: "The suspects were subsequently transported back to Gqeberha for further investigation.

"On Friday, the investigation led to the discovery of the body of a child in a shallow grave at St George’s Beach."

The suspects have been arrested on a murder charge and are expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
