Tragic incidents involving learners collapsing and dying during school sports have once again come into focus in South Africa after several similar cases in recent years across rugby and football fields.
Among them was a reported 2018 incident in Pretoria where a learner collapsed during a rugby activity and later died. In 2022, another school sports tragedy was reported in South Africa involving a learner who collapsed during a match and could not be revived.
The following year, in 2024, a similar incident was reported in Gauteng, where a learner collapsed during a school rugby fixture and later passed away. In 2025, another tragic case was reported in Gqeberha, where a teenage player died after collapsing on the field during a school sports match.
These incidents have once again raised concerns about emergency response readiness and the medical risks faced by learners during competitive school sport.
The latest tragedy occurred on Friday at DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg, where a Grade 9 learner from HTS Sasolburg collapsed during a rugby match.
The learner, Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, was taking part in an Under-15 FNB Classic Clash fixture between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School when he suddenly experienced severe breathing difficulties on the field.
He was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital but was later declared deceased.
Free State Department of Education Mamiki Maboya said the province was devastated by the loss.
“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community. We extend our condolences and support during this difficult time,” Maboya said.
The match forms part of the long-running FNB Classic Clash rivalry between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School, which has been staged for nearly 47 years and is regarded as one of the province’s most anticipated school sporting fixtures.
Maboya said the department would support both the school and the family following the tragedy and praised the quick response of emergency personnel.
“We will support the school and family in any way possible and appreciate the swift response of medical personnel.”
He added that the loss highlights the fragility of life and called for unity during the mourning period.
“Nhlakanipho's passing reminds us of the fragility of life. We stand with his loved ones and the school community in mourning this loss,” Maboya said.
