HOW TO PREVENT CONFRONTATION

A road rage confrontation in Emmerentia escalated into a fatal shooting in broad daylight, leaving one man dead, a woman injured, and two young children traumatised after witnessing the attack on their parents.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, April 19, began as an altercation between two male drivers before spiralling into gunfire.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the confrontation escalated when a female passenger, believed to be the wife of one of the drivers, allegedly retrieved a firearm from a vehicle, prompting the other driver to also draw a weapon.

The exchange of gunfire left one man dead at the scene, while the woman sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to hospital. The second driver escaped with minor injuries.

“It is alleged that a female passenger suspected to be the wife of one of the drivers went to get a firearm from the car, and the second driver also pulled out his firearm, resulting into a shooting that claimed the life of the husband while the other driver sustained minor injuries and the female passenger was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound.”

A video circulating online captures the immediate aftermath of the shooting, showing the victims lying on the ground moments after the incident.

The man is seen motionless, while the injured woman sits nearby bleeding as bystanders attempt to assist. Their two young children, who witnessed the shooting, can be heard crying hysterically.

Eyewitnesses are seen rushing to intervene, with a young girl running toward her parents in distress before being pulled back by bystanders attempting to shield her from the scene. A boy, believed to be about four or five years old, is also seen trying to resuscitate his father before being lifted away by witnesses as he struggles to process what has happened.

In another moment, the alleged suspect, a 58-year-old man, is seen nearby, reportedly on his phone, while a firearm lies on the ground.

Nevhuhulwi confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened and that the suspect has been arrested.

“The police will be investigating a case of murder and attempted murder,” she said.

The 58-year-old is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 21, as investigations continue.

As yet another road rage incident has turned deadly, safety organisation Arrive Alive has urged motorists to take control of their emotions behind the wheel, warning that a single moment of anger can have fatal and irreversible consequences.

10-POINT PLAN TO PREVENT "ROAD RAGE"

  • Forget work or home worries; concentrate on driving.
  • Plan your journey to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • Adopt a positive mental attitude - to help with frustration.
  • Playing music can reduce stress.
  • Don't try to change other drivers' attitudes; you can't, but you can change your own.
  • Be courteous and stay calm if provoked.
  • Drive with your car doors locked, and if you see trouble, don't leave the safety of your vehicle.
  • Count from 1 to 10 (it's old and it works!)
  • Don't retaliate by sounding your horn, flashing your lights, or gesturing; this will only aggravate the situation.
  • If you are a victim of aggression, take the registration number and report the incident to the police.
