South African soldiers have intercepted a suspected cross-border smuggling operation near Ficksburg in the Free State, recovering counterfeit designer goods worth almost R2 million after suspects fled across the border into Lesotho.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirmed the incident, saying it forms part of ongoing operations aimed at securing vulnerable border areas.

According to the SANDF, the operation involved a patrol team who were conducting routine surveillance along known hotspot areas near the river behind the Ficksburg Port of Entry taxi rank.

The area is widely identified as a high-risk crossing point for illegal movement between South Africa and Lesotho.

The SANDF said that while patrolling the area, soldiers came across six boxes containing branded clothing believed to be part of an illicit consignment.

“While moving through the area, the soldiers came across six boxes packed with branded clothing. As soon as the suspects noticed the soldiers, they did not stick around; they dropped everything and fled across the river into Lesotho,” the SANDF said.

No arrests were made during the operation.

Authorities added that the abandoned consignment consisted of high-end counterfeit goods, including clothing, sneakers, belts, caps, and handbags from well-known designer brands.

“The total estimated value of the recovered goods is R1 984 500.00.”

Authorities further confirmed that all recovered items were secured at the scene and later handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation and processing under lost and found procedures.

The SANDF reiterated that border safeguarding operations remain a key priority in curbing illegal cross-border activity.

“The South African National Defence Force, through the 10 South African Infantry Battalion, continues to intensify border safeguarding operations,” it said, adding that together with other law enforcement agencies, it remains committed to preventing illegal activities and strengthening security along South Africa’s borders.
