An alleged domestic dispute involving SAPS members turned deadly in Kariega, Eastern Cape, after multiple shots were fired at a residence, leaving three constables dead and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The tragedy unfolded shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 7, after police responded to reports of shots fired at a residence in Rudman Street.
According to Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, officers arrived at the scene at about 12:45am and discovered three constables suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Two officers were declared dead at the scene, while a third later died at Cuyler Hospital.
“Upon arrival at the scene, responding officers found three constables with multiple gunshot wounds.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that a male constable believed to be the former boyfriend of a female constable allegedly forced entry into the residence where she and another male constable were present.
“Witnesses reported hearing shots fired, after which all three members sustained fatal injuries,” she added.
Police also confirmed that a state-issued firearm was recovered at the scene together with 10 live rounds, which will now form part of ballistic investigations.
Given that the incident involves deaths following police action, IPID has been notified and is conducting a parallel investigation alongside SAPS internal processes.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata described the deaths as devastating for the police service.
“This is a tragic and devastating loss for the SAPS family. Three young officers have lost their lives under heartbreaking circumstances. We are providing trauma debriefing and counselling to all members affected, and we will ensure the families receive the support they need during this difficult time.”
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased officers pending notification of their families.
Police said no further details can be released at this stage in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
