Tributes continue to pour in following the passing of artist and multi-disciplinary creative Maria McCloy, with the Gauteng Provincial Government describing her as a pioneering force in South Africa’s arts and entertainment sector.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile paid tribute to McCloy’s legacy, saying her contribution to the country’s creative sector was both far-reaching and deeply influential.

“Ms McCloy was a true and fierce champion of the arts in South Africa. Her life’s work made a huge cultural impact that not only showcased her own talents but those of other brilliant artists.”

“Condolences to the McCloy family, all of her collaborators and colleagues in the arts. May she rest in eternal peace.” Maile added.

McCloy passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026, at the age of 50 at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after suffering heart failure, her family confirmed.

In a statement, the McCloy family described her as a vibrant and influential figure whose life was defined by creativity, connection and generosity, saying her passing has left a deep loss both personally and within the broader creative industry.

“Maria sadly passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026, at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg following heart failure,” the family said.

They added that she had a rare ability to bring people together through her work and personality.

“Her kindness, warmth, generosity and unwavering love for those around her touched many lives and will never be forgotten. She had a special way of bringing people together, and her presence brought comfort, laughter and love to all who knew her.”

McCloy leaves behind her mother and two sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha, as well as extended family, friends and colleagues across South Africa’s entertainment industry. The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

“The family humbly asks for privacy as they grieve and come to terms with their loss and kindly ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

They also expressed gratitude for the public support received since news of her passing.

“The family also extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love, messages of support and condolences received since the news broke.”

McCloy was widely regarded as a trailblazer in South Africa’s creative industry, particularly in the early years of democracy, when she helped amplify African creative voices across the continent and internationally.

Over her career, she worked as a DJ, publicist and fashion designer, earning a reputation as a dynamic multi-disciplinary artist who moved fluidly between music, fashion and media.

Her passing has been widely described within the industry as a significant loss to South Africa’s cultural landscape.
