Police arrest suspects and confiscate illegal firearms and drugs in coordinated operations across the Western Cape. File picture
Police in the Western Cape have made significant strides in curbing the distribution of drugs and illegal firearms, making high-profile arrests and seizing illegal contraband in a series of bold, fast-paced operations across the province.
In Oudtshoorn, on Friday, October 11, police acting on intelligence, monitored a delivery destined for Jones Street. Officers observed a suspect retrieving a parcel later found to contain methamphetamine with a street value of R92,750. A Nigerian national was arrested on the scene for drug dealing.
"The members stayed in close proximity of the address until the delivery vehicle arrived," said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.
The suspect was taken into custody following the transaction.
In an unrelated operation in Grabouw, on Saturday, October 12, police searched a vehicle on a farm and found a 9mm Norinco pistol and ammunition hidden under a seat.
The 31-year-old suspect, who did not have a valid firearm license, was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
"The male was not in possession of a valid license to be in possession of the mentioned firearm and therefore detained for the unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition," said Swartbooi.
Later that day, Maitland Flying Squad officers responded to a shooting in Hanover Park. Upon arrival, they spotted a speeding vehicle and pursued it.
“The members gave chase and managed to stop the vehicle and searched the occupants which resulted in the recovery of a Z88 pistol with ammunition and drugs,” Swartbooi said.
Seven suspects, aged between 26 and 43, were arrested on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and drugs.
The suspects will appear in the Oudtshoorn, Grabouw, and Athlone Magistrate’s Courts.
