Police arrested six suspects on the N2 highway near Kinkelbos following the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old man during a house robbery in KwaMaqoma township near Fort Beaufort on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said that officers stopped a Suzuki Ertiga matching the getaway vehicle description at around 7pm on March 10. Inside the vehicle, police found one unlicensed firearm with ammunition and a stolen cellphone.
"The firearm is to be subjected to a ballistic test. The suspects were all detained on charges ranging from murder to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition," said Nkohli.
The suspects were positively linked to the murder of Bulelani Dayile, 40, who was shot while seated in his kitchen in Mbewu Street, KwaMaqoma, around 5.30pm on the same day.
Police reports state that four armed suspects entered the house, opened fire, and stole a cellphone before fleeing.
Authorities immediately circulated the vehicle description to all police units, leading to its swift interception.
"The six men are due to appear in the KwaMaqoma Magistrate's Court on Thursday, March 13," said Nkohli, adding that they face charges of murder, house robbery, possession of stolen property, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Sarah Baartman District Operations Command Centre Commander, Colonel Andries Landman, commended the officers for their quick response.
"A meticulous plan and an effective coordination of resources was key to the arrests. Our detectives are busy profiling the six suspects," said Landman.
