A 39-year-old man has been fatally wounded during a shoot-out with police at Macibe Location, outside Centane, Eastern Cape.

The incident followed a high-speed chase after the suspect allegedly refused to stop for a routine vehicle search.

Police said officers were performing their duties in town when they attempted to stop a Toyota bakkie.

The driver failed to comply and sped off, prompting a chase in the direction of Macibe Location.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, said: “The vehicle drove to the direction of Macibe Location and the driver immediately stopped and started shooting to the police who then reacted and the suspect, 39, succumbed to his injuries.”

Following the shootout, police recovered a 9mm pistol and a magazine with live ammunition.

“An inquest and attempted murder docket has been opened and will be taken by IPID for investigation,” said Mawisa.
