SNIPR Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology has been applauded, following the successful interception of a wanted vehicle, demonstrating its proactive ability to detect such vehicles and prevent further crime.

This follows coordination and a swift response after Mobi-Claw911 Control received a crucial alert from the SNIPR ANPR system at approximately 8.17am on Tuesday. The alert flagged a black BMW 3 Series associated with an ongoing assault case in Westville.

Upon receiving the alert, Mobi-Claw911 control immediately notified SAPS Westville and the Durban Metro Police. A Mobi-Response911 armed response vehicle, along with two tactical response vehicles, was dispatched to intercept the vehicle, according to Mobi-Claw911 spokesperson, Mike Myers.

“The Mobi-Response911 officer successfully located and stopped the wanted BMW,” Myers said.

Shortly thereafter, Mobi-Claw911 tactical units and a local volunteer arrived.

“On-scene verification confirmed that the vehicle was unlicensed and displaying false number plates. The licence disc affixed to the vehicle was registered to a Hyundai.

“One suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended and handcuffed by the response team,” Myers said.

Thereafter, SAPS and Durban Metro Police arrived at the scene.

“It was established that all occupants were foreign nationals with no identification or documentation in their possession,” Myers said.

The intercepted BMW was found with false number plates.

He said the vehicle was seized and the suspects were arrested and taken to Westville SAPS for further investigation.

“This successful interception highlights the proactive capability of SNIPR ANPR technology in detecting wanted vehicles and preventing further crime. The system provides real-time alerts and photographic evidence, enabling rapid identification and coordinated response,” Myers said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu said Westville police arrested three foreign nationals aged between 25 and 38 for being in the country illegally. They are expected to appear in court soon.

“One of the arrested suspects might be linked to a common assault case where a 42-year-old male was assaulted on August 15, at his place of residence following a dispute over unfinished work done at the victim’s residence,” Ndlovu said.
