The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the sentence imposed on serial rapist Daniel Nchawe Molefe, 33, who has been jailed for four life terms and an additional 25 years for a string of violent attacks committed in Evaton between 2019 and 2023.
Molefe was sentenced in the Pretoria High Court sitting in Palm Ridge after being convicted of raping four women aged 20, 30, 32 and 34, as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
NPA Regional Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the authority endorsed the ruling.
The crimes began in October 2019, when a 30-year-old woman was dragged from a vehicle, assaulted and raped. Further attacks were reported in June 2022, August 2022 and February 2023, each involving victims being threatened, assaulted, dragged to isolated locations and raped.
Molefe was arrested in October 2024 after police investigations linked him to the series of offences. Although he pleaded not guilty, the State presented detailed victim testimony and other evidence, leading to his conviction.
"State Prosecutor Mokautu Masilo led compelling evidence, including detailed testimonies from all victims, proving his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt," said Mahanjana.
Victim Impact Statements revealed ongoing trauma, including difficulty sleeping and challenges relating to men.
"Masilo highlighted the gravity and prevalence of the offences, Molefe's lack of remorse, and the severe emotional and psychological harm inflicted on the victims."
The court found no substantial or compelling reasons to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences. Molefe's attempt to argue for reduced sentencing on the basis of being a first-time offender who had spent 13 months in custody was dismissed.
Mahanjana said the sentence reflected the gravity of the crimes. "Men should know that when a woman says no to sexual intercourse, it means no, and it is not an invitation for them to force themselves on her," said the judge.
