A routine cash-in-transit operation turned into a dramatic heist on the N2 in Durban when armed suspects ambushed the security vehicle on Saturday.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu said Bellair police are investigating a cash-in-transit robbery that occurred along the N2, on the M7 off-ramp.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the driver of the cash vehicle stopped the vehicle after the M7 off-ramp after noticing the vehicle overheating. Whilst on the phone with the controller, a white vehicle allegedly stopped alongside the cash vehicle and armed suspects allegedly stepped out of that vehicle with rifles, overpowering the driver and the security crew,” Ndlovu said.

“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. No fatalities were reported.”

It was reported that explosives were used on the cash vehicle.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that after 3pm, the service received several calls for medical assistance needed at a cash-in-transit robbery that had occurred on the N2 northbound just before the M7 or on top of the M7 bridge going towards Durban.

Jamieson said that when paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the cash-in-transit vehicle had been blown up by an unknown number of suspects and assessed the two security officials.

“The two security officials sustained no injuries, fortunately, and the scene was handed over to SAPS for further processing,” Jamieson said.

He said Metro Police and the South African Police Service closed the N2 south and northbound lanes for a significant amount of time to allow for the scene to be processed.

In an unrelated incident, earlier this month, a cash vehicle was targeted along the R617 in KZN.

According to police, an undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the vehicle on the R617 main road near the Mahwaqa location.

The van was travelling from Underberg towards Bulwer when it came under attack from an unknown number of suspects travelling in at least two vehicles. The suspects overpowered the guards, robbed them of their firearms, a pistol and a rifle, before fleeing with bags of cash.

Police said no injuries or fatalities were reported.
