Motorists heading towards Musina have been advised to delay their travel due to a serious crash that has forced the closure of the N1 North at the Witvlag turn-off.
According to Limpopo Traffic and Road Safety, the collision — involving a tanker and a hatchback — occurred earlier on Tuesday morning. The road remains closed in the northbound direction, towards Beitbridge, with severe traffic congestion reported in both northbound and southbound lanes.
The incident comes amid misty and rainy conditions, prompting authorities to warn drivers to switch on headlights, reduce speed and exercise extreme caution.
Motorists travelling between Louis Trichardt (Makhado) and Musina are advised to postpone their trips where possible until the road is reopened.
"If you're planning to travel between Louis Trichardt and Musina, it's best to delay your trip if possible – there's a severe traffic backlog in both northbound and southbound directions," the Limpopo Traffic and Road Safety Department said in a statement.
Alternative routes have been provided:
From Musina: turn right onto the R523 towards Siloam, then turn right to rejoin the N1 at Witvlag.
From Makhado: turn right at Witvlag, proceed to the R523 junction, turn left and continue towards N1 Willispoort.
Traffic officials say updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
Motorists are urged to drive safely and remain patient.
