Police in the Eastern Cape have opened a murder case after the body of a 27-year-old man was discovered lying on the street

Police in the Eastern Cape have opened a murder case after the body of a 27-year-old man was discovered lying on the street in Helenvale on Saturday evening.

According to the police they responded to a complaint at approximately 21:45 about a body on Elk Street. On arrival, the man was found lying on the road with a wound to the back of his head. Authorities have confirmed that no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing

"SAPS Gelvandale confirmed that a case of murder was opened after the body of a male was found on the street on Saturday, 27 December 2025, in Helenvale," spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said.

"It is alleged that at approximately 21:45, SAPS Gelvandale responded to a complaint of a body in Elk Street, Helenvale.  On arrival, they found the body of a 27-year-old male lying on the road with a wound to the back of his head. No further information is available, and no one was arrested".

She added that police are appealing to the public for any information that could help identify and apprehend the suspect(s).

"Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect (s) to contact the nearest police station. The information may also be shared via Crime Stop on 08600 10111," she added.

Three months ago, IOL also reported that a 62-year-old man was shot through the neck and killed in his flat in Nelson Mandela Bay.

"The motive and identities of the suspects involved in the murder are being investigated," Beetge said at the time.

"A murder case was opened and being investigated by Bethelsdorp police."
