Two Eskom safety representatives have briefly appeared in the Emalahleni Regional Court in Mpumalanga on allegations of soliciting and receiving gratification linked to operations at Eskom’s Majuba Power Station.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, said the accused, Bongane Masina (43) and Rahab Pulane (45), were investigated by the Middelburg-based Serious Corruption Investigation team.
Hawks provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi said the matter stems from an incident in September 2024 involving a truck contracted to deliver coal to Majuba Power Station.
“Information at our disposal indicates that a truck en route to Majuba Power Station from the mine suffered a tyre blowout. While the driver was still at the scene, the truck was bumped by another truck from the mine also travelling to the power station,” Nkosi said.
Following the accident, Eskom suspended the trucking company’s operations pending an internal investigation.
Nkosi alleged that Masina and Pulane then approached the owner of IZICWE Trucking Company and demanded R30,000 to “negotiate” the company’s return to operations.
“An amount of R30,000 was deposited into the two employees’ accounts. However, the matter was not resolved, and they allegedly demanded a further R30,000 as gratification,” said Nkosi.
Feeling pressured, the truck owner reported the matter to the authorities. Investigations into the flow of funds allegedly linked the payments to the two Eskom employees.
On Thursday, 8 February 2026, the pair were served with notices to appear in court. They made a brief appearance on Friday, 13 February 2026.
The case was postponed to 26 April 2026 for further proceedings.
Nkosi said investigations form part of ongoing efforts by the Hawks to clamp down on corruption involving state-owned entities.
