The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has reiterated its appeal for public assistance in identifying a person of interest following a fatal shooting in Driftsands, Mfuleni, on February 21, 2026.

According to police, the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime detectives are investigating a murder and attempted murder after two friends were ambushed while waiting for food at a shop on the corner of Duif and Langeni streets.

"Three armed suspects exited a faded silver-brown Datsun seven-seater and opened fire. One victim was shot multiple times and later died in hospital, while the other survived after being shot in the legs and assaulted."

Authorities confirmed that surveillance footage from the scene is central to the investigation.

A male captured in the video is considered a “person of interest” who may assist the police with their inquiries. The SAPS has stressed that this does not mean the individual is a suspect, but rather someone who could provide crucial information.

This clarification comes amid public concern following reports that an AI-generated or misidentified image circulated on social media falsely linked a local teenager to the crime, sparking fear and distress for the family.
