A suspected drunk driver is behind bars after a devastating head-on collision claimed the lives of a young girl and a motorist in Ekurhuleni on Friday morning.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), officers rushed to a crash scene involving two vehicles.

"EMPD Clayville Precinct Officers responded to an accident scene on Olifantsfontein Road and South View, involving two vehicles."

It is alleged that the driver of an Audi, a 30-year-old man, smashed into a Toyota Avanza while under the influence of alcohol, with catastrophic consequences.

"Tragically, a young girl between the ages of 10 and 11 years, along with the driver of the Avanza, succumbed to their injuries and were both certified dead on scene by paramedics."

"He has since been arrested and will face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, culpable homicide and fleeing the scene."
