Four suspected criminals were fatally wounded and two others arrested following a dramatic shootout with police in Soweto, Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the incident unfolded after intelligence from the Modus Operandi Centre indicated that a group was planning an armed robbery at a business in Kwezi, Mofolo.

Mogale said a multi-agency team comprising members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operation Management Section, Badboyz Security, and the Gauteng Highway Patrol responded to the intelligence and located vehicles matching the suspects’ description near the targeted premises.

"The team picked up the described vehicles near the intended target where the robbery was to take place. Upon realisation that police were observing, the suspects split as they fled in their two vehicles and police gave chase.

"A high-speed chase and shootout ensued, and four suspects were fatally wounded in the aftermath whilst two were arrested," said Mogale.

The arrested suspects are expected to face charges including business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of illegal firearms.

Mogale added that there's a manhunt for a seventh suspect who fled on foot during the chase.
