Police in Rustenburg, North West, have made a major breakthrough following the arrest of two men linked to a hijacking and kidnapping incident.

The suspects, aged 46 and 49, were apprehended on Friday morning.

The South African Police Service (Saps) said a 38-year-old truck driver was delivering diesel worth over R30,000 to a depot in Rustenburg when he was approached by an unknown man posing as an assistant.

"The suspect produced a firearm and ordered the driver back into the truck," the police said.

"The victim complied, and the armed suspect entered the vehicle with him."

Two other suspects also boarded the truck, forcing the driver to transport all three men.

Unbeknownst to the suspects, the driver activated a panic button, alerting the Cash-In-Transit (CIT) Task Team.

Officers quickly traced the truck to Ramochana near Rustenburg, where the victim was found inside the vehicle.

One suspect fled, while the remaining two were arrested on the spot.

The suspects have been charged with hijacking and kidnapping and are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

"The swift response by our CIT Task Team ensured the safety of the victim and led to the prompt arrest of the suspects," the police added.
