Two senior police officers and a civilian have been arrested in Gauteng following a police investigation into alleged illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals.
According to a News24 report, the two officers are Senior Crime Intelligence official Major General General Feroz Khan and Gauteng Hawks head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa.
The arrests were carried out as part of an ongoing probe into suspected illicit transactions involving precious minerals, with the suspects expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
"The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirms the arrest of two senior officers and a civilian allegedly linked to the illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals following an intensive investigation by the Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations (GCI-OPS)", police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
"The suspects were arrested following investigations into allegations of illicit precious metals transactions, corruption and related offences."
Mathe added that the arrests were carried out over the weekend through the execution of a J50 warrant by investigators, as part of efforts to crack down on the illegal trade.
"The suspects are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges that may include the unlawful dealing in precious metals, defeating the ends of justice, corruption and contravention of applicable legislation regulating precious metals in South Africa," she added.
