Mahikeng-based crime activist Thato Molosankwe has died after being shot at his home in Lomanyaneng on Wednesday.
Police confirmed that Molosankwe sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack.
In a strong response, Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane has ordered the immediate deployment of maximum police resources to track down those responsible for the killing.
Dimpane condemned the murder in the strongest possible terms, vowing that investigators would leave no stone unturned in the hunt for the gunmen behind the deadly shooting.
“Molosankwe has been described by local police as a community-minded individual who played an important role in assisting police efforts aimed at fighting crime and corruption, as well as strengthening relations between the SAPS and communities,” police said in an official statement.
Known in the community for his outspoken stance against crime and corruption, Molosankwe worked closely with local law enforcement and community structures in efforts to improve safety and accountability in the area.
The Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit has since taken over the investigation, as authorities intensify efforts to establish the motive behind the killing and identify the suspects involved.
The murder has sparked growing concern over the safety of community activists and anti-crime campaigners in the province.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
