In his opening remarks at the India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Dialogue, held under the auspices of South Africa’s G20 Presidency, President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored the urgent need for solidarity, equality, and sustainability in addressing global challenges.

Welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, along with other distinguished delegates, Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the collective capacity of the IBSA nations to shape the global agenda, rather than merely participate in it.

“The world in which we live is changing rapidly and dramatically,” President Ramaphosa stated. “It is clear that the countries of IBSA are ready to be part of global change and to work for a better future.”

Highlighting IBSA’s enduring cooperation, Ramaphosa proclaimed the grouping affirms that diversity is not a fault line but a source of strength.

“It reminds us that collaboration among equals is indispensable to global peace, prosperity, and stability. Our cooperation is grounded in the daily realities of our people.”

He called for ambitious reforms of global governance institutions and renewed commitments to climate action and energy transitions, emphasizing the need to safeguard food and health security.

“We must ensure that the benefits of technological progress are shared equitably,” Ramaphosa urged. “We must position ourselves as co-architects of a more representative and responsive multilateral system.”

Addressing the underlying economic inequalities afflicting the world, the South African president stressed that these structural faults “can only effectively be addressed through a new paradigm of inclusive economic growth.”

President Ramaphosa also highlighted practical cooperation within IBSA, citing ongoing initiatives such as the IBSA Fund, which supports those most in need.

He welcomed the forthcoming signing of a collaboration agreement on foundational learning, a follow-up to recent commitments by the three countries’ education ministers.

As South Africa assumed the IBSA chairmanship, Ramaphosa pledged to deepen the group’s frank and reflective dialogue.

“As we gather under the G20 Presidency theme of ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’, let us recall that IBSA is more than a forum for dialogue. IBSA is a catalyst for global transformation.”

Concluding his address, the president highlighted the broader significance of IBSA’s mission.

“Together, we represent not only the aspirations of our own citizens, but the hopes of a Global South that seeks dignity, respect, and partnership in shaping the future.”

The IBSA Leaders’ Dialogue sets a tone of cooperation and renewed determination as South Africa leads the G20 in navigating the complex challenges facing the world today.
