The City of Johannesburg moved swiftly to repair a long-neglected pothole in Douglasdale, after a viral video showed Helen Zille swimming in the water-filled crater.

Residents say the gaping hole and a persistent water leak outside their homes had gone unresolved for more than three years despite repeated reports to municipal departments.

By Tuesday afternoon, road crews had filled the cavity and sealed the damaged pipe.

“It shouldn’t take a spectacle for basic services to be delivered,” said Thabo Maseko, who lives nearby. “We’ve been raising this for years. Suddenly, it’s fixed overnight.”

Thando Mtambo said “What a relief because this was a burden. But let’s not go ahead of ourselves, we still need to see if the repair is actually complete”.

Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero visited the site and rejected claims the repair was politically driven.

According to Morero, the pothole was fixed on Sunday. Zille went to the area on Saturday.

“This matter was logged and processed through the city’s systems,” he said.

“We encourage residents to report faults and partner with us to resolve them.”

Morero added that ageing steel and asbestos pipes across Johannesburg remain a systemic challenge, with replacement programmes under way.

He said additional road damage linked to the leak would be escalated for further repairs.

Zille defended her intervention, saying the aim was to force visibility on neglected infrastructure.

For residents, the fix brings relief but also unease. The road is usable again, yet questions linger about consistency and accountability in a city battling service delivery backlogs.

Morero also urged residents to use the Joburg Connect app to log faults directly, promising faster response times and improved tracking of complaints.

Residents say they will be watching closely to see if the momentum lasts beyond this moment and ensure consistent service delivery.
