The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma, is expected to intervene after a distressed mother from the Umzinyathi District Municipality contacted his office seeking assistance following the death of her husband in Russia.

Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said Sibonelo Ndwandwe from Kranskop received news on March 28 about the death of her husband, Sihle Makhaye, 44. He reportedly died in Russia after allegedly being recruited to fight in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The wife requested Duma's assistance to ensure the repatriation of her husband's remains.

She also sent correspondence outlining options, including a military burial in Russia or cremation and repatriation of the remains, with expenses to be covered by the family.

Any of the arrangements would require a family member to travel to Russia.

"Duma has tasked HoD Human Settlements, Max Mbili, to lead a team from Human Settlements to do the profiling of the family," said Sibiya.

He added that the family reportedly lives in a mud house and an RDP house built by the government shortly after 1994, and that the department is working to determine appropriate support measures.

"He [MEC] is liaising with relevant leaders in government and outside government.

"In particular, the MEC is liaising with the Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, to seek guidance."

Duma has also mandated his office to bridge the gap between the widow and various spheres of government, while a visit to the family will take place once his schedule allows.

The MEC has also wished the family strength during the difficult period.

It is alleged that at least 17 men were approached with promises of employment opportunities abroad, before later being drawn into military-related roles linked to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
