Caspar Greeff, a 90-year-old, has challenged the conventional view of retirement by graduating from the University of Johannesburg with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy, demonstrating that lifelong learning is possible at any age.
The University of Johannesburg pointed out that when most people picture a 90-year-old, they imagine retirement and rest. But for Greeff, the picture is different: it is one of determination, discipline, and a laptop.
At an age when most are slowing down, Greeff has sped up intellectually, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy from the University of Johannesburg (UJ). He is now a symbol of perseverance and a powerful advocate for lifelong learning.
“I believe that everyone should continue learning, no matter how old they are,” says Greeff.
“Learning should continue throughout life.”
His journey back to academia was sparked by a desire to keep his mind sharp after retiring as an actuary at 85. Greeff, whose impressive academic record includes a BSc in Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, faced his biggest hurdle with modern technology.
“I had to get used to using a laptop consistently,” he said.
With support from his daughter and lecturers, Greeff gradually became comfortable with online assignments and exams.
Greeff's achievement is a testament to the success of UJ’s online BCom Accountancy programme, which was launched to broaden access to quality education. According to Professor Marelize Malan, Deputy Head of the Department of Accounting, Greeff's story "reinforces the value of lifelong learning and the importance of creating inclusive academic opportunities for everyone.”
Far from a sedentary life, Greeff also maintains an active lifestyle. He began road running in 1969 and still participates in five-kilometer park runs, proving his discipline extends beyond books.
"We slow down with age, but experience helps counter that," he says, adding that many people his age or older can still earn degrees.
His advice to young people is to build good habits early: “Like sportspeople, you must train your mind and body. Discipline is the foundation of success.”
In a world shaped by technology and change, Greeff embraced the digital age with courage and has become a symbol of resilience, possibility, and the enduring power of education.
