A toy laser was shone straight into SA singer Bobby van Jaarsveld’s young son’s eye in an incident that nearly left him blind.
Van Jaarsveld has shared a warning to parents after the freak accident left his family fearing the worst.
In an emotional message, he said Leben lost about 90% of his sight.
He said doctors at one stage even warned the child might lose the eye completely.
"Didn't think I was going to share this, but I feel I need to warn people," Van Jaarsveld said on Facebook.
"My son lost 90% of his sight because of an innocent laser that was shining in his eye."
The shocking incident sent the family into a nightmare as doctors initially warned that the situation was far more serious than they had hoped.
At one stage, the family was told the child might even lose his eye completely.
He described the unimaginable fear parents feel when hearing news like that, saying the emotions were impossible to put into words.
The family turned to prayer while desperately searching for answers and seeking additional medical opinions.
Eventually they were referred to a specialist who performed a delicate operation to try to save the damaged eye.
Against the odds, the procedure was successful.
Van Jaarsveld said even the doctor described the outcome as nothing short of extraordinary, explaining that very few people are able to keep their eye after suffering such severe laser damage.
For the family, the result felt like a miracle.
Now, the singer is urging other parents not to underestimate the danger of handheld lasers, which are often treated like toys.
His message was blunt and urgent: "Parents... Break those lasers."
