Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane announced plans to appoint a law firm to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic wall collapse at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.
The fatal incident occurred on Thursday, March 26, 2026, claiming the life of an 8-year-old Grade 3 learner, Lwazi Motuse.
Chiloane went to visit the bereaved family on Monday.
During the visit, the MEC extended condolences and pledged the department’s continued support following the devastating loss.
Chiloane said the independent investigation is necessary given the seriousness of the incident and it aims to establish the full circumstances that led to the collapse of the school wall.

The department confirmed that psycho-social support services are being provided to affected learners, educators and the grieving family. It also stated that all other learners who were injured in the incident have since been discharged from hospital.
“We convey our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family. We remain committed to supporting the family and the entire Lerutle Primary School community during this deeply difficult time,” Chiloane said.
The department said the wall collapsed and fell onto six learners, leaving them with severe injuries.
"Emergency services responded swiftly, and all six learners were transported to various medical facilities for urgent medical treatment. Tragically, one of the injured learners, a Grade 3 boy, later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention in hospital," the department said at the time.
