Gauteng has been urged to close an unlicensed old age home in Krugersdorp after it ignored a third demand by authorities to stop operating.
DA spokeswoman Hendrika Kruger said the provincial hospital licensing authority ordered La Reynette Frail Care Centre in Rant and Dal in December to close but it continued recruiting new residents.
La Reynette was denied a licence because it did not adhere to minimum safety standards.
Kruger said Mogale City mayor Koketso Seerane had promised the local municipality would see to it that the Gauteng health department did not register the old age home as a frail care institution.
“Seerane also advised the department to assist with facilitating the accommodation and care of the older persons in other residential facilities,” Kruger said.
La Reynette came to the attention when neighbours complained of screaming and shouting coming from the facility, Kruger said.
Gauteng health spokesman Simon Zwane said the department was “well aware” of what was happening at La Reynette.
“We are taking the necessary steps to ensure this facility abides by the law,” he said. – Sapa
