The Kempton Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 27-year-old Zenco Van Wyk to six years in jail for contravening the Drug Trafficking Act.
Gauteng spokesperson for the Hawks, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said in August 2022, officers from the Border Management Authorities stationed at the OR Tambo International Airport intercepted Van Wyk who had just landed in South Africa from Brazil.
“Upon searching Van Wyk’s bag, half a kilogramme of cocaine, with an estimated value of R1.5 million, was found and seized by authorities which led to his subsequent arrest,” said Mavimbela.
On January 15, the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court found Van Wyk guilty of contravening the Drug Trafficking Act.
On Tuesday, the court sentenced Van Wyk to six years direct imprisonment.
Two South African nationals have been arrested with cocaine shortly after landing at OR Tambo International Airport from São Paulo, Brazil.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel, Amanda Van Wyk said the duo was arrested on Friday at the busy airport after they were allegedly found in possession of cocaine with an estimated street value of R7.5 million.
"The pair, a male and a female arrived separately on different flights from Brazil when they were intercepted by police. Upon inspection, the female suspect was allegedly found in possession of cocaine worth R2.5 million, while the male suspect was allegedly carrying R5 million worth of cocaine in his luggage," said Van Wyk.
The duo has been charged with drug trafficking and will appear in court soon.
In December, two Brazilian drug traffickers aged 30 and 35 were arrested shortly after landing at OR Tambo International Airport from São Paulo, Brazil.
