Severe thunderstorms expected in several provinces as the Western Cape braces itself for damaging winds

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an alert to anticipate severe thunderstorms across several provinces on Thursday and Friday.

Provinces including North West, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal are likely to experience widespread and intense thunderstorm activity, leading to concerns over localised flooding in vulnerable areas.

KwaZulu-Natal is poised to bear the brunt of these storms. The SAWS has indicated that the combination of heavy rainfall and potential for flooding could affect roads, informal settlements, and agricultural land, posing risks to both property and livelihoods.

Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves and their belongings.

In a related warning, the Western Cape is bracing for damaging winds beginning Wednesday evening and continuing through to Friday.

Residents from Saldanha Bay to Cape Agulhas should prepare for strong south-easterly winds, with speeds reaching between 50 to 70 km/h and gusts escalating up to 90 km/h. These winds are expected to extend to Plettenberg Bay by Thursday, with moderating conditions forecast for areas north of Table Bay into Friday.

The SAWS has cautioned that these persistent winds could lead to potential disruptions in coastal towns, affecting local infrastructure and posing dangers for those involved in maritime activities.

Travelers and those living near the coast are advised to monitor the situation closely and to adhere to safety recommendations issued by local authorities.

The marine community is also urged to heed the warning. Smaller vessels are likely to face difficulties navigating at sea due to the turbulent wind conditions. Owners are strongly advised to seek shelter and avoid venturing onto open waters during this period.
