It is with deep sadness that Build One South Africa (BOSA) has learned of the passing of Neil De Beer, founder and president of the United Independent Movement (UIM), who succumbed this morning after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Neil De Beer dedicated his life to South Africa’s political and democratic project. He served in various roles within the ANC and in government, most notably as the former ANC National Security Advisor to Nelson Mandela and as an intelligence agent for Umkhonto we Sizwe.
BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane worked closely with Neil in a spirit of partnership, where their organisations, OSA and UIM, collaborated to educate citizens about the importance of direct elections and to recruit and support community activists in standing for public office.
Neil was a passionate advocate for strengthening South Africa’s democracy through reform, accountability, and people-centred leadership. His work extended beyond the borders of his own movement.
Neil’s passing leaves a void in South Africa’s political landscape. His voice, energy, and unwavering commitment to the people will be sorely missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his colleagues in the UIM, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
May his legacy of courage and service continue to inspire new generations of leaders.
