The first month of 2026 has already been marked by significant global developments.
We considered focusing this editorial on the actions of the U.S. president, whose policies continue to impact human rights and international stability through threats of invasion or intervention.
We also could have opted to comment on the "New World Order" as described by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney following his strategic trade agreements with Chinese President Xi Jinping — a move many hail as a shift away from economic reliance on Washington, a regime that has been engaging the world in trade and tariff wars.
However, a tragedy closer to home on Monday demands our immediate attention and condemnation.
Young lives were lost in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, while being transported to school. Authorities have since confirmed that the number of deceased learners stands at 12, not 13 as reported earlier. The scene was unbearable, leaving parents in states of shock and despair. One parent, who lost two children, asked, "What did I do to God to deserve this?"
This is a devastating start to the new year. Preliminary investigations indicate that the minibus taxi was overloaded. Sources on the scene suggest the 22-year-old driver had been previously warned by other motorists for reckless driving. Most alarming are reports that the driver attempted to overtake four vehicles before colliding head-on with an oncoming truck. While the driver survived, thirteen children did not.
Police are currently investigating the roadworthiness of the vehicle and the validity of the driver's professional driving permit (PDP). A case of culpable homicide has been opened, with additional charges likely to follow.
We yearn for assurances that such a calamity will not recur in our community, but the reality is stark: preventative measures hinge on our collective responsibility as road users. The conditions of our vehicles, adherence to safety regulations, and respect for fellow commuters make a significant difference in averting future tragedies.
Our thoughts are undoubtedly with the families of the deceased children. This horrific accident underscores a pervasive issue on our roads, one that demands urgent attention to ensure that further loss of innocent lives is prevented. We must work collectively to create a safer environment, not only for our children but for everyone on the road.
