A fire has wreaked havoc on Johannesburg’s historic Zoo Lake Bowls Club, leaving the historic site in ruins.

It is reported that the blaze broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning, prompting a swift response from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS). Fire crews received an emergency call just before 7am, arriving at the scene to find that the wooden structure had already succumbed to the flames.

Scores of firefighters battled valiantly against the inferno, which spread rapidly due to the building's timber framework and ongoing renovations. By 10am, the EMS successfully contained the fire, though crews remained on site to monitor for any potential flare-ups.

It is further revealed that despite the extensive damage, no injuries have been reported. The establishment has been a cornerstone for many, attracting residents and visitors alike for years with its welcoming atmosphere and recreational activities.

As investigations into the cause of the fire commence, the Johannesburg community reflects on the impact of this loss. The Zoo Lake Bowls Club not only provided a venue for friendly competitions but also served as a social hub that brought together individuals and families from all walks of life.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is yet to comment on more developments of the story.
