The City of Johannesburg's waste management company, Pikitup has raised alarm over a growing number of complaints that some employees have been requesting Christmas gifts from residents.
According to the company, communities across its 12 depots have reported incidents where staff allegedly knocked on doors or pressured households for festive “gifts”, despite a strict organisational ban on soliciting or accepting anything from the public.
They condemned the behaviour, calling it unprofessional and unacceptable.
“Pikitup strongly condemns this conduct and reminds both employees and the public that soliciting or accepting gifts from residents is strictly against company policy,” the entity said.
The company urged residents to help curb the practice by reporting incidents immediately.
“If anyone experiences this, please note the registration number of the compactor truck and report it to our call centre. We rely on your vigilance to help us take decisive action.”
It is also announced that waste collection services will continue as normal across Johannesburg throughout the December holiday period, with the exception of Christmas Day, 25 December 2025. Operations will run as usual on December 16, December 26 and January 1, 2026.
With households expected to generate more waste during the festive period, the entity also encouraged residents to make use of its integrated waste management facilities for safe disposal.
A full list of sites, including addresses, operating hours, and accepted waste types, is available on their website.
