With only days remaining before the commencement of the 2026 academic year, anticipation is growing nationwide.
Parents and learners are preparing for the new term, with many sharing updates on school essentials in advance of the reopening.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has released the official school calendar for 2026, generating particular excitement for learners attending school for the first time. Public schools nationwide will officially reopen on Wednesday, 14 January 2026.
In related news, the department confirmed that the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results will be published in accredited newspapers on 13 January 2026. The results will appear in a pseudonymised format, showing only examination numbers and outcomes, without including learners’ names, surnames, or ID numbers.
“In line with our commitment to the rule of law, the DBE is legally obliged to publish results in this pseudonymised format, as required by the court order granted on 18 January 2022,” the department explained.
The DBE emphasized that newspaper publication remains a key way for learners and parents to access results quickly. “This established, court-endorsed practice balances accessibility with the protection of personal information,” the department added.
Regarding the Information Regulator’s application for leave to appeal, the DBE confirmed it will oppose the application, stating: “This opposition is pursued in the best interests of learners, their families, and the education sector. We believe the application has no reasonable prospects of success, given the clarity already provided by the courts.”
At the same time, the department reaffirmed its respect for the regulator’s role: “Our opposition should not be seen as a lack of respect. We value the Regulator’s constitutional mandate and look forward to continued constructive engagement,” the DBE said.
