Search ends: Missing Ekurhuleni MMC confirmed dead in flood disaster

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Planning and Leader of Government Business, Andile Mngwevu, has died after the vehicle in which he was travelling was swept away by floodwaters in Chókwè, Mozambique.

It is revealed that Mngwevu and fellow passengers were caught in severe flooding when their vehicle was swept away.

After a week-long search-and-rescue operation, joint efforts by South African Search and Rescue teams, in collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, led to the recovery of those who had gone missing.

His family confirmed his death in a statement, saying:

“The Mngwevu family announces with deep sorrow and profound sadness the untimely passing of our beloved son, husband, father, and dedicated servant of the people, Mr Andile Mngwevu. Mr Mngwevu tragically passed away while on a trip to Mozambique, when the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floods in the Chókwè region. This devastating incident has left the family, friends, colleagues, and the broader community heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.”

They described Mngwevu as a devoted family man and a committed servant of the people, whose life was marked by humility, compassion, and principled leadership.

“Andile Mngwevu was a loving and devoted husband, and a man whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Throughout his life, he made a difference in people’s lives through his selfless service, principled leadership, and genuine care for the well-being of those around him. His integrity and kindness earned him deep respect and admiration across the communities he served.

Beyond his public service, Andile was a pillar of strength within his family, a source of love, guidance, and unwavering support. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void; however, his legacy of service, leadership, and humanity will forever remain entrenched in the hearts of all who knew him.”

The family has requested privacy during the mourning period, and said details of the memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

“The Mngwevu family humbly requests the public to keep them in prayer during this difficult and painful period. The family further respectfully requests privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved Andile and navigate this time of profound grief. Details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.”

The ANC in Gauteng also shared its condolences, saying:
