Joburg Ballet is giving young dancers a boost with a special fundraising initiative aimed at supporting its Pointe Shoe fund, which provides essential tools for talented students who may not otherwise afford them.
The campaign features a first-of-its-kind sculpture by artist Guy du Toit, Cygnets (first edition, 1/16), inspired by the iconic “Dance of the Cygnets” from Swan Lake. The work transforms du Toit’s signature hares into dancers en pointe, capturing movement, elegance and playfulness.
Elroy Fillis-Bell, CEO of Joburg Ballet, said: “We are deeply grateful to Guy du Toit, Everard Read Gallery and RMB Latitudes for this generous initiative. Supporting Joburg Ballet’s Pointe Shoe fund directly supports talented young dancers who do not have the means to purchase the essential tools of their craft. This allows us to continue nurturing young talent through development programmes and ensuring the continued excellence of ballet in South Africa.”
The donor competition is limited to 300 people, with a minimum R1 000 donation per entry. Each donation earns one entry, giving participants a chance to win the first edition of Cygnets, valued at R90 000. The remaining 15 editions will be available at the Everard Read Gallery.

Carolynne Waterhouse of RMB Marketing said: “We are delighted that RMB Latitudes is hosting this partnership – a project that extends the largesse from one creative discipline to another. Art and dance both rely on talent, discipline, tenacity, creativity and public support. We trust this initiative not only raises meaningful funds for Joburg Ballet but also celebrates the spirit of collaboration that keeps culture thriving.”
The initiative will be part of RMB Latitudes Art Fair, taking place from 22 to 24 May 2026 at Shepstone Gardens. Visitors can view a curated collection of du Toit’s smaller hare sculptures in the Chapel at Shepstone Gardens, alongside the competition display.
Beyond the Fair, a public art installation at the RMB Fountain in Sandton features a special edition Guy du Toit hare sculpture overlooking the intersection, reflecting the Fair’s commitment to bringing art into public spaces and making culture accessible to thousands of commuters and passers-by.
Participants can enter the competition and support the dancers by finding Joburg Ballet staff at the Everard Read Gallery during RMB Latitudes or donating online at https://www.joburgballet.com/latitudes.html
