If you are searching for the ultimate burger experience, Cape Town is officially the place you need to visit.

The global food experts at Time Out recently released their highly anticipated list of the best burgers in the world, and the results completely validated our local food scene

Zuney's Wagyu Burger snatched an incredible second place globally, leaving heavyweight competitors from the United States and Europe in the dust.

The only burger that managed to outscore our homegrown hero was the Smash Things burger in Tokyo.

So, what exactly makes this specific burger so irresistible to thousands of taste-testers?

Zuney focuses on absolute freshness and a perfectly balanced flavour profile, skipping unnecessary culinary gimmicks entirely.

The magic starts with a 160g A5 wagyu patty sourced from responsibly farmed cattle in the Eastern Cape.

This premium beef is topped with a slice of brûléed Monterey Jack cheese, rich confit-shallot jam, crispy charred iceberg lettuce, and a savoury umami-miso béarnaise sauce, all sandwiched in a buttery brioche bun.

You can experience this perfectly engineered bite for yourself at their location right on Kloof Street. They recently opened a restaurant in Rosebank as well.

The Time Out ranking is just the latest in a massive winning streak for the popular eatery.

Ever since opening their doors, they have collected major industry awards like clockwork. They secured the prestigious title of South Africa's Luxe Burger Joint of the Year for 2024 and were named the Best New Restaurant in the Western Cape by Uber Eats that same year.

The locals clearly agree with the critics, having handed the restaurant the Luxe People’s Choice Award for Cape Town in both 2024 and 2025. Most recently, the brand dominated the Econofoods National Burger Challenge, taking home top honours at the 2025 Africa Food Show hosted by Gulfoods.

The fantastic news doesn't stop at the Mother City's borders, either.

South Africa proved it is a massive force in the international comfort-food scene with another incredible win on the same Time Out list.

Johannesburg's very own Mafia Bite snagged the impressive eighth spot globally.

Their signature "John Gotti" creation features twin brisket and short-rib patties, a sweet-and-spicy peri-peri honey glaze, and smoked scamorza cheese.

Together, these world-class restaurants are proving that South African kitchens can comfortably hold their own against anyone, turning our local streets into essential destinations for foodies everywhere.
