Police in Thohoyandou have arrested a 40-year-old pastor in connection with the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl at a church in Sibasa.
The alleged incident occurred on July 9, 2025. Reports indicate the suspect called the minor to the church premises. Upon her arrival, the victim found the pastor alone in the church office. It's alleged the suspect locked the door, forced the victim to perform sexual acts, and then repeatedly raped her. He then reportedly instructed the victim to remain silent about the incident.
The victim bravely disclosed the ordeal to her family on Saturday, July 19, prompting immediate notification to the police. A rape case was opened and is being investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
The suspect was arrested today, Monday, July 21, and is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court to face rape charges.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting this serious crime. "We encourage parents and guardians to maintain open communication with their children and to report any suspicious behaviour immediately," Lieutenant General Hadebe stated.
Police investigations are continuing.
