A 53-year-old South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member allegedly shot and killed his 17-year-old son before attempting to take his own life at Ha Mutsha village in Levubu, Limpopo, on Sunday, October 19.

Police said they received a call about a shooting at around 6.17am. When officers arrived, they found the man outside in a pool of blood with a 9mm pistol next to him. Several spent cartridges were found nearby.

Inside the house, police discovered the boy’s body on a bed with gunshot wounds to the head.

The man, based with the SANDF near Mookgophong, was taken to hospital under police guard.

The motive is not yet clear, but police said domestic violence was being investigated as the likely cause.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident.

“I once more call upon families to seek professional help when experiencing domestic challenges instead of resorting to violence,” she said.
