Members of the SAPS Trio Task Team and Crime Prevention Unit made a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal firearms when they seized four AK-47 rifles and more than 300 rounds of ammunition from a suspect in Protea Glen.

A 39-year-old man was arrested in Protea Glen, Soweto, after police recovered four AK-47 rifles, several magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition during a stop-and-search operation on Wednesday October 22.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), members of the Protea Trio Task Team and Crime Prevention Unit were conducting routine patrols in Protea Glen Extension 28 at around 6.45pm when they stopped a silver Mercedes-Benz with no number plates.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of:
Four AK-47 rifles
329 live rounds of AK-47 ammunition
21 live rounds of R5 rifle ammunition
10 AK-47 magazines
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the weapons and whether they are linked to other crimes.
SAPS has urged community members to continue reporting illegal firearms and suspicious activity to help curb violent crime in the area.
