Police have seized R20 million worth of cocaine during an intelligence-driven operation at a plot in the upmarket Blue Hills Estate in Midrand, Gauteng.

The drugs, weighing about 80kg, were found hidden in a storage room on Tuesday evening.

“According to further investigation, the drugs were brought into South Africa from a neighbouring country and were destined for Cape Town, Western Cape,” SAPS said in a statement.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a multidisciplinary team led by Crime Intelligence Head Office, along with members of the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, Johannesburg K9 Unit, and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), acted on information about drugs being stored at the property.

A man believed to be the owner of the property was arrested on the scene. He is expected to appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court later this week on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.

Police say investigations are continuing.
