A man is expected to appear in court in connection with the fatal stabbing of his 47-year-old girlfriend and the wounding of her 16-year-old daughter at their home in Makatu Village, Siloam, on Monday, November 3.

Police said the suspect, 48, forced his way into the home while the woman was asleep with her daughters. The teenager woke to her younger sister’s screams and, when she tried to intervene, was also stabbed several times before the suspect fled the scene.

The woman was found dead at the scene and her daughter was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

The suspect, a known repeat offender, was arrested the following day in Biaba, Makhado, following intelligence from the community. He is expected to appear before the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, November 5.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers praised the coordinated efforts of Siloam and Makhado police.

“This incident is yet another tragic reminder of the scourge of gender-based violence in our communities. We commend members of the community for providing valuable information that led to the apprehension of the suspect,” Scheepers said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
