For the 1 700 learners at Erasmus Monareng Secondary School in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, a new chapter in their learning journey has begun - literally.

A brand-new library, donated by Hyundai Automotive South Africa in partnership with DP World and the Motus Community Trust, is set to transform how learners at the school read, study and explore new ideas.

The facility gives learners a quiet, safe space to read, do research and study, something many have long wished for.

Grade 11 learner Relebogile Nakeng said she was overjoyed at finally having a dedicated study space.

“I’ve tried studying in different places, even local eateries, but it was hard to concentrate,” she said. “Having a proper library with different types of books makes me really happy. I can already see myself spending a lot of time here.”

Acting Principal Mbongiseni Hadebe said the library would help learners improve their reading and comprehension skills, particularly in languages, areas where many have struggled.

“Some learners could not read their own work, which affected their performance across subjects. This library will change that,” he said.

Despite infrastructure challenges, the school continues to perform strongly, maintaining an average matric pass rate of around 80% over the past five years.

“For 2025, our goal is to reach a 95% pass rate,” said Hadebe. “One of our proudest moments was when a learner achieved 100% in Mathematics, proof that excellence can come from anywhere, even township schools.”

During the handover, Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, encouraged learners to embrace the opportunities that come with access to knowledge.

“Vehicles can move people from one place to another, but education moves entire communities forward,” he said. “Education builds futures, opens doors, and plants seeds that grow into generations of empowered individuals.”

The new library is the 23rd community library built through Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s partnership with DP World and the Motus Community Trust, part of their long-term commitment to expanding access to education.
