Body of missing Yassen Amed recovered from Benoni Lake after car found abandoned

The search for 29-year-old Benoni man Yassen Amed ended in tragedy when his body was recovered from Benoni Lake on Tuesday night.

A man who went missing after a lunch outing with his mother has been found dead in Benoni Lake. Yassen Amed was reported missing on November 30, 2025 after he failed to return home following the afternoon lunch date. His disappearance prompted an extensive search by family, community members and authorities.

On Tuesday evening, his vehicle was discovered in Farrarmere, Benoni, with the keys still in the ignition. Shortly afterwards, emergency personnel recovered his body from Benoni Lake.

Anti-crime activist and social commentator Yusuf Abramjee also posted news of Amed’s death on his X account on Wednesday, drawing widespread public attention to the case.

Police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
