For many Joburgers, December is a whirlwind of last-minute shopping, holiday parties and the hunt for experiences that capture the magic of Christmas. Streets twinkle with lights, shop windows overflow with gifts and families look for ways to make the season truly special.

Just a short drive away on the West Rand, families are discovering hands-on festive fun that blends creativity, giving and quality time together. Children are decorating baubles with ribbons, glitter, beads and stickers, building sparkling snow jars with iridescent snow and pom-poms and painting tropical-inspired Christmas scenes featuring Stitch and other beloved Disney characters. The air is alive with laughter and little hands buzz with glitter as kids craft personalised ornaments for their own trees.

The festive spirit goes beyond arts and crafts. Families can capture the season with photos alongside Santa, wrap gifts with community volunteers and contribute to a Christmas tree adorned with plush toys destined for children facing life-threatening illnesses through Reach For A Dream. Every donation or interaction adds a note of generosity to the celebrations, turning festive shopping into a chance to give back.

“Christmas is about connection, generosity and shared experiences,” says Prianka Singh Rodgers, Marketing Manager of Clearwater Mall. “This year, we wanted to create a festive programme that brings families together, supports important causes and makes the final shopping days feel enjoyable rather than stressful.”

From Lilo and Stitch-themed bauble workshops to island-style paint-and-sip sessions, young artists are encouraged to explore their creativity while learning the joy of giving. Parents and grandparents join in the fun, capturing memories and helping children wrap gifts, turning simple activities into cherished holiday traditions.

As the countdown to Christmas continues, families across Johannesburg and the West Rand are proving that the heart of the season isn’t just in the decorations or the presents, it’s in shared laughter, DIY creations and the joy of giving together.
