The Melville Art Mile is set to become a permanent monthly event following a successful pilot in December that attracted hundreds of visitors and recorded no security incidents.
Organisers announced that the official season launch will take place on Thursday, February 5, transforming parts of the Melville precinct into a walkable art and culture route featuring galleries, restaurants, markets and live performances.
The pilot event, held in December 2025, drew 438 attendees and served as proof of concept for what organisers describe as a community-led initiative aimed at revitalising Melville’s reputation as one of Johannesburg’s cultural hubs.

The expanded route will run from the Bamboo Lifestyle Centre through the Joburg Artist Market (JAM) to Die Pienk Kerk, with additional venues including the Melville Mudroom and surrounding businesses participating in exhibitions and activations.
Founder and project coordinator Aubrey Moloto said the event was designed to reclaim public space through a combination of art, safety and collaboration. “We proved that when you bring robust security, seamless logistics and captivating art together, Jozi is ready to reclaim its streets,” Moloto said.
The expanded Art Mile route connects key Melville landmarks, encouraging visitors to explore the precinct on foot.

Safety remains a central focus of the event, with the Melville Security Initiative overseeing security on behalf of the Melville Residents Association, supported by additional internal security teams at participating venues.
To improve accessibility along the roughly 2km route, a fleet of branded tuk-tuks will operate between venues, offering free rides to ticket holders and paid options for walk-in attendees.
Organisers say the Melville Art Mile is designed to reclaim public space while boosting foot traffic to local businesses.

The launch will feature a range of activities, including live jazz performances, printmaking workshops, photography exhibitions, street art installations and interactive art experiences hosted across multiple venues in the precinct.
Organisers say the Art Mile is intended to boost foot traffic to local businesses, support artists and contribute to Johannesburg’s growing night-time and creative economy.
The Melville Art Mile will run from 4pm to 9pm. Entry is free with registration, while guided tour options are also available.
