TikTok, social media platform has reported significant content moderation activity in South Africa between July and September 2025, removing more than 920 000 videos that violated its Community Guidelines.
The platform reveals that of this content, 99.5% was proactively removed before users reported it, and 96.7% was taken down within 24 hours of posting.
Globally, it removed more than 204 million videos in the same period, representing about 0.7% of all content uploaded to the platform. Of this content, 99.3% was removed proactively, and 94.8% within 24 hours, marking one of the highest rates of rapid content removal in the platform’s history. Automated technologies now remove 91% of violating content, ensuring faster and more consistent enforcement.
To maintain platform integrity, it is reported that over 118 million fake accounts and more than 22 million accounts suspected of being under the age of 13 were removed.
Focus on well-being and safety
Building on the 2025 Digital Well-being Summit held in Johannesburg, the platform reported targeted actions to protect its South African community:
Mental health support: 98.3% of content violating mental and behavioural health policies was removed within 24 hours.
Safety and civility: Nearly 100 000 videos were removed for violating hate and violence policies, addressing issues like bullying and harassment.
LIVE session safety: The platform interrupted 150 000 LIVE sessions, representing 2% of all streams, for guideline violations.
